It allows additional traits in Science or Mutation categories. It seems like a minor thing, but I see it used rather frequently, especially the Science one for a faction pushing a larger diversity for their weapons or training.
Since you have more Adaptive traits when you create your faction they are using this trait to get a more solid foundation on Science and Knowledge to furthermore unlock higher level traits in more branches for their class builds.
For example you start off with 1-2 Science and Knowledge Traits, but 3-4 Adaption Traits.
So they take this trait out of Adaption and with it take Chain Mail which is an armory trait. Then take Heavy Crossbows, and Martial Blades.
What this does is grant a lot possible good equipment to everyone in your faction, but keeps you point costs down since they are Armory Traits.
Now they pick two more Adaption Traits and call it a day. Like Heroic Nobility 3pts and Legendary Heroes for 3pts.
This gives you a base faction point cost of 8pts which is very efficient. Of course you will have a solid list of good equipment for your entire faction and your classes now get access to take Tier 2 traits in three different categories in the Science and Knowledge areas.
Hmmm, just created a quick faction.😀 Of course you classes would be the defining point, but Ive seen quite a few Humanoid classes created in this manner but focused on different traits. (I was just grabbing traits off the top of my head).
As for Adaptive Mutation. If you are making a faction of Giants, or even Dwarves this gives you additional flexibility to create something that might be otherwise harder to reach.
